“If You Build It, He Will Come”: Trusting God’s Voice In Your Practice, Even When It Doesn’t Make Sense
Alright, by a show of hands, who loves movies of the 80s? I mean, there was “Back to the Future,” “The Breakfast Club,” “Star Wars,” – I could go on! But have you seen the one about the crazy man who built a baseball field in his backyard? Well atleast, everyone else thought he was crazy.
I’m talking about the movie “Field of Dreams (1989)” where a humble farmer in Iowa hears a mysterious voice in his cornfield whisper to him, “If you build it, he will come.”
Although he didn’t know what it meant, he felt a strong call to do this thing that made no logical sense. Eventually, he tore up a large portion of his corn crop to build a baseball field… yup, I wasn’t kidding.
Despite the controversial thoughts and opinions being thrown at him left and right, Ray decided to stay true to the voice. As the movie went on, something miraculous happened; relationships were restored, healing happened, and dreams came full circle. But– none of this would’ve happened if he hadn’t said yes to that voice– the voice that represents the voice of God.
How This Speaks To Faith-Based Practice Owners
How This Speaks To Faith-Based Practice Owners
There’s something powerful that happens when we take a leap of faith. Many of us who are called to start a faith-based practice or move forward in a new direction in our business feel a lot like Ray did.
We often hear God’s whisper:
“Start your own practice.”
“Bring Me into the therapy room.”
“Create a space where faith and healing meet.”
“Build a community that doesn’t exist yet.”
Typically, at first, it doesn’t make sense. It might mean the difference between a steady paycheck and a few months of not knowing what’s going to happen. It might mean the people around you don’t understand. It might drive you to the desire of wanting to do something that hasn’t been done before, yet you’re scared because you don’t know how.
It’s like with my business. I had such a strong desire to bring together faith-based community because I saw a need in the world of therapy that not many people were tackling. I saw the importance and value in walking with like-minded individuals while trying to judggling running a practice. That is why I created the Wise Practice Community. The Wise Practice Community is a membership for Christian therapists and practice owners who want to grow their business and stay rooted in their faith. I offer weekly courses, live office hours, and in general, we build lasting relationships that are priceless. You can visit our page to learn more about it here.
I didn’t know what this would look like before I built it. But I felt a tug on my heart to do so.
Ray felt a call too. We are not like the world, so we can’t do things like the world. We aren’t doing this just to be successful–we’re doing this because we are called..
Obedience Comes Before Outcome
In Field of Dreams, Ray had no proof that what he was building would matter or that it would even work. He just had a voice and a whole lot of faith.
The same goes for us. Obedience often comes before clarity. God may not show us the full picture, but He gives us the next step. And when we walk in obedience—even if we look a little “crazy” to the world—He moves in ways we never imagined.
We may not see the fruit right away. We may even question if we heard Him right. But when God calls, He provides. He doesn’t always give us the blueprint, but He always walks with us as we build.
Every faith-based practice that exists today started with someone who said “yes” to a whisper from God. Someone who built something that wasn’t there before. Someone who believed that if they built it—not just with their hands, but with their heart—God would show up.
And He does.
You’re Not Alone
If you’ve been feeling called to something bigger in your practice—whether that’s starting, growing, or shifting—it’s okay to not have it all figured out. What matters is your willingness to listen and obey.
God doesn’t call us to blend in or do what everyone else is doing. He calls us to build what doesn’t exist yet. After all, He did make us in His image – the one who spoke something out of nothing–the creation of the universe! And the good news? You don’t have to do it alone.
That’s why I created the Wise Practice Community as I mentioned above.
