The Strength in Weakness: Why Practice Owners Don’t Have to Have It All Together
A couple of weeks ago, I found myself in tears.
I didn’t have it all together. I felt overwhelmed, stretched thin, and honestly, a little ashamed to admit it.
As a practice owner, there’s this constant pressure to be strong. After all, we’re the ones leading teams, serving clients, and carrying the weight of big decisions. But on that morning, I couldn’t carry it anymore. I felt weak.
And here’s the hard truth: I was scared to let anyone see that side of me.
But eventually, I reached out to a group for prayer. And in that moment of vulnerability, something incredible happened—God answered in a way that went far beyond what I could have asked or imagined (just like Ephesians 3:20 promises).
That experience reminded me of something many of us forget: it’s okay to be weak. In fact, weakness isn’t something to hide or be ashamed of. It’s where God’s strength shows up the most.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
As Christian practice owners, we often pour into others without remembering that we need pouring into as well. We try to be everything for everyone, forgetting that only God carries that role. And when we pretend to be stronger than we are, we cut ourselves off from the help and healing we actually need.
The truth is, being a practice owner can feel lonely. Between managing staff, serving clients, handling finances, and navigating growth, it’s easy to believe the lie that we have to be strong 100% of the time.
But here’s the good news: we’re not meant to walk this alone.
The Pressure of Being a Practice Owner
Owning a practice is a beautiful calling—but it comes with weight.
You’re not just responsible for your clients’ care, you’re also overseeing the well-being of your team, balancing the budget, marketing your services, and making sure your practice is sustainable long-term.
And if you’re a faith-based practice owner, there’s often an added layer of expectation. You may feel pressure to be a “spiritual leader” as well—someone who never struggles, always has the answers, and always models strength.
But if we’re honest, that pressure can be crushing. Pretending to have it all together leaves little room for authenticity, let alone healing.
The truth? You weren’t designed to carry it all. Only God can do that.
What Scripture Says About Weakness
Throughout Scripture, God uses moments of weakness to remind us where true strength comes from.
Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 12:9 that God’s power is made perfect in our weakness. That means our struggles aren’t disqualifiers—they’re opportunities for His grace to shine.
Even Jesus modeled vulnerability. In the Garden of Gethsemane, He wept and prayed in anguish, asking His Father if there was another way. He didn’t hide His pain. He brought it honestly before God and His closest friends.
Weakness isn’t failure—it’s an invitation. An invitation to stop striving in our own strength and start leaning into God’s.
Why Community Matters
Here’s the thing: weakness becomes dangerous when we isolate ourselves.
When we hide our struggles, we cut ourselves off from the very people who could hold us up in prayer, speak truth over us, and remind us that we’re not alone.
God designed us for community. Galatians 6:2 tells us to “carry each other’s burdens.” That means admitting we have burdens in the first place.
One of the most powerful moments I’ve experienced came when I admitted my own weakness and asked for prayer. It wasn’t easy. It felt scary to admit that I didn’t have it all figured out. But in that moment, God showed me the gift of community—the gift of not having to carry everything alone.
For practice owners, having a circle of people who truly understand what you’re walking through is life-changing. Because it’s not just about being encouraged—it’s about being understood.
